Daan Kleijn Trio

Bright lights, big heights and a slight breeze that’s always around. It’s 8 p.m. and the bustling crowds are looking for a comfortable place to have dinner and enjoy some live music. A young man with a guitar on his back and an amp on a cart behind him, finds his way through the crowds at Bleecker street. One year ago he crossed the Atlantic to move to the center of music and art, New York City. Tonight he is part of that center and in a slight hurry to get to his performance in one of New York’s fine jazz clubs…
Born in the Netherlands, Daan Kleijn started playing guitar at the age of seven. Ten years later he was accepted at the prestigious Prins Claus Conservatorium. There he developed his musicianship resulting in graduating ‘summa cum laude’ and winning the VNO-NCW Talent Award and the Gasterra Talent Award. During this time he also recorded, co-wrote and produced two full length albums with the band ROOS., touring extensively throughout the Netherlands. In addition, Daan played numerous concerts with renown jazz artists like Benny Golson, Alex Sipiagin, Kenny Werner and Billy Drummond. After graduating, Daan moved to New York City to pursue his master’s degree at New York University, fully supported by a scholarship given as part of the Huygens Talent Program.
In November 2013 Daan Kleijn Trio (with Tobias Nijboer and Joost van Schaik) published a new album called TRIO.
Daan Kleijn joined the Global Union of Young Artists with his trio which includes the great musicians Tobias Nijboer on double bass and Joan Terol Amigó on drums.
Tobias Nijboer (1985, the Netherlands), after graduating at Prins Claus Conservatorium in 2008, he pursued his master’s degree at SUNY Purchase College, New York.
Tobias has performed at North Sea Jazz Festival (’04, ’05, ’08), at jazz clubs throughout the Netherlands and Germany, at Smalls Jazz Club and Birdland (NYC), and toured throughout Canada (o.a. Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria, Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto).
Joan Terol Amigó, (1985, Catalonia) has been interested in music since he was a kid and went to see his mother sing in a choir of Barcelona. He graduated in jazz drums at the ESMuC (Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya) in 2010. Since September 2011, he is currently living in Amsterdam after studying a jazz master degree at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. During his carrier he has been playing a lot with Catalan and Spanish jazz musicians and also as a sideman of jazz figures like Benny Golson, Jorge Rossy, Jesse Davis, Grant Stewart, Maria Schneider, Joe Magnarelli, Carla Cook, Perico Sambeat, Raynald Colom, Marc Miralta, Joris Roelofs and Maarten Hogenhuis, and recorded a tribute album to Lee Konitz with his featuring in the recording. “Daan Kleijn is one of the most talented and promising guitarists I have heard in a long time. He has all the tools to be an important part of the jazz scene in NYC and around the world. He has a great melodic imagination, a beautiful sound, and a strong musical personality which he will no doubt continue to develop as he gains valuable experience working other great musicians. He has a lot to offer to the world of music!”
Peter Bernstein

“Daan is an extraordinary player with very clear technique and great sound.”
Alex Sipiagin

“Daan has become a great composer and a swinging interpreter with rare and natural technique. He has proven to be a gifted bandleader that is motivated to organize concerts and events in many venues. As a native New Yorker with 25 years experience I can say he will be a wonderful addition to the jazz scene.”
